I have to say that RSS is something completely new for me. After attending Carla Arena´s Braz-Tesol express presentation, I could notice that I was a 1.0 internet user. I used to surf the net just to look for information and to check my e-mails. I´ve never thought before about the power of interaction, that´s why I have to reflect upon the tools so much to grab their real concepts. About RSS, it can help us save time and have the feeling that besides our busy lives we can find time to check the news and exchange information. Great tool!
Blogging is a new experience for me. I used to hear people talking about blogging but I´ve had a vague concept about it. I saw it as a personal journal, a kind of a diary. But I have been discovering it is much more than that. The possibilities are unlimited. You can share, learn about new topics, find useful information, keep in touch with people, discover new things and there are so many other possibilities that it is difficult to list here. What about blogging in the classroom? I have never thought about it before and I wondered how it was possible. At the same time I noticed that students were also blogging and everything seemed so natural, easy and fun that I got curious about this tech tool. Then, last year, I took part in José Antônio´s workshop in Taguatinga about Blogger. It was really nice! And now I can see myself blogging…isn´t it amazing? Well, at least, that´s the way I feel about myself and the things I did this week. I posted a You Tube video in my Blogger…by myself!!!!! I think it was a rewarding moment for me…when I saw my video and my post in my Blogger. So, I hope I can keep going and learning because I intend to use it to enrich my classes and to become part of my students´tech world.
Social online bookmarking can help teachers share new ideas and activities. It is also a powerful tool to find resources for classroom activities. There are many advantages about having bookmarking as a social activity, it is possible to exchange ideas with different people from different cultures, easily find something you need, keep yourself updated about new tendencies and many others. I believe I can use Diigo in my classroom, previously checking my friends´ and my own bookmarking, and using the links in the MIMIO room to illustrate something I´ve talked about, in the end of a class, or even to start a new topic by making students curious through infomation, videos or images from a Diigo link that I´ve bookmarked while planning the class.
Well, to get started with social online bookmarking was really difficult for me. I read the tutorials many times, watched the videos and the slide show, but as I´ve never used it before, it took me a long time to understand things and to accomplish the goals from Week 3. I still feel insecure about doing things using Diigo but I am going to keep trying until I feel more confident about it. I´m sure I´ll be able to use it in the classroom as soon as I feel more familiar with the tool.
I really enjoyed the comics added by Carla! It´s funny and real at the same time. It can illustrate my feelings about technology at home when I need help from my nine-year-old son to deal with tech things such as video games, computer games, internet and even the TV, DVD, NET....millions of remote controls on the coffee table of my living room and the only thing I want is to turn the TV on! Take a look.....
Teaching is a challenge. Even more now in the 21st century when we have technology around. Students these days learn a lot using all kinds of tech devices we can possibly imagine! They are digital natives and also digital learners. They need attention so they want their teachers to engage them the way they feel familiar with: using digital resources. They learn at home, at school, on the streets, at the mall, in the car...wherever they are because they carry those portable video games, cellphones, laptops, iphones, idpods and others. Anytime is a good time for learning even because they receive lots of information and visual messages everywhere and all the time. In different words we can surely say they learn using the WWW: whatever, whenever and wherever. Students expect from teachers the freedom to create and build their knowledge sharing with each other. They don´t want to receive information anymore, they can´t sit down inside a classroom for hours just listening. In fact they don´t listen at all. They want the teacher to be a facilitator not a chatterbox that stands in front of the classroom talking over and over.
I really want to learn how to use the WWW to reach my students, to interact and to learn from them. I know my curriculum doesn´t provide so much tech-richness as a digital immigrant that I am, but I believe I´m trying hard and having some progress not only taking this course but also raising a digital native. It´s amazing to reflect about something we see every day but we don´t stop and pay close attention to it. At least so far, because these two videos have changed my way of looking at the students and the learning process. It´s like my mind is getting wide open for possibilities and opportunities that were there before but I simply couldn´t see them and now I see myself wearing the glasses of the 21st century to keep going. And then I can suddenly notice that I should use much more the WWW to teach my students than I do. Following this path it´s possible to turn our 21st century classroom into learning engines and there is not the necessity to have a hard time acquiring knowledge, it´s going to be a pleasant and interesting journey. You reach the students, they feel you can understand them. They trust you. The learning process becomes meaninful.
I believe that changing behavior, taking risks and learning from them are three important items to consider when the point is engaging them. I try to engage my students searching for news and for things they are interested in, using the computer, songs, pieces of movies....but I´ve never thought about using cellphones or even their ipods in class. WOW!
Maybe my main barrier to incorporate technology in my classroom is not having enough knowledge and bright ideas to explore tech tools the way I wish. But I´m sure that after this course I´ll be able to do it successfully!
